Leigh Milner returns with the gaming news for November 2020.

Cyber Punk 2077 has been delayed again. Again! The developer CD Projekt Red says the latest delay has been caused by issues with the game's current-generation console builds. It’s coming out on 10th December now. Apparently

Fans of Roblox are distraught… as the “oof" sound that accompanies the death of characters has been removed. Now you have to pay a pound for it... and the developer who originally created the sound for a game released 20 years ago, will get compensation.

We obviously can’t use their off because we’re tight, so here’s Chris now… with his impression

OOF

Nintendo, has seen its profits triple in the six months leading up to September. The firm made two billion dollars, as coronavirus lockdowns increased demand for its products. Video games like Animal Crossing have helped increase sales.

Playstation has paid to have it’s iconic square, circle, x and triangle symbols put above Oxford Circus and other underground stations in London… they look nice.

Failing to buy a PS5
Chris Berrow, Naked Gaming Podcast

Chris Berrow relives the nightmare that was... trying to buy a PlayStation 5 on 19th November (launch day)!

Starting at 0755 Chris woke up to try John Lewis, Currys, Game and eventually Amazon... but none of them had a PS5 in stock. In the end he wasted 5 hours of his life looking at crashed websites. It's as if Playstation don't want his money. Listen to find out more.

06:27 - Video games boost wellbeing

One study has recently linked gaming to happiness, but why does it go against 40 years of previous findings?

Video games boost wellbeing
Andrew Przybylski, Experimental Psychologist and Director of Research at the Oxford Internet Institute

Chris Berrow talks to Andrew Przybylski -  an experimental psychologist and Director of Research at the Oxford Internet Institute, who authored the study linking gaming to happiness.

Andy - Well, I mean, in a funny kind of way, this is definitely the kind of study that should have probably been done, you know, 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Um, social scientists tend to fall back when they can... on asking questions, uh, of their participants. You know, whether you're interested in aggression or addiction, uh, or, or maybe even the positive benefits of play, we haven't really bothered to directly measure the behavior of players themselves.

Chris - Do you believe that the fact that there's a positive trend now in that people are gaming for longer and, and I suppose reporting feeling happier that has anything to do with this year in lockdown and pandemics and people being more disconnected this year?

Andy - Yeah, it, it, it might, and it, it also might have something to do with the fact that we only looked at two games out of, you know, a few million that are out there in the wild and, and the games that we looked at, we looked at them specifically because they were social, uh, that a social component to them and they were internet connected. So there's probably a question about how much these findings would generalize, you know, whether or not it would just be, uh, all a mess when it comes to the amount of time people play games and their wellbeing, but really, uh, this is why more research of, of a higher quality is needed.

Chris - What would you like to see done next in regards to research in this field? Because it seems like as you suggest that there's a long way to go...

Andy - Nintendo of America and EA they really stuck their necks out, you know, that tiny, positive correlation we found, uh, between playtime and wellbeing that could have easily gone in the other direction. And then they would have been facing a lot of really bad press. Um, and so I think it's, uh, it's it's, and they didn't know what the results were. I, I should actually make that very clear. Um, we, we collected the data in such a way that, that for the surveys, the people's wellbeing, we, we collected and stored that here at Oxford, and they had data on telemetry, but we're the ones who kind of married it together, uh, with, with a unique identifiers that the games companies couldn't control the results, or, you know, they couldn't exert control, not since they wanted to obviously, but, um, but no, th th the big next step obviously, is, is involving more companies and following a larger, more representative sample of players, uh, over time.

Chris - And was this small, positive correlation, big enough to get excited about cause obviously everyone is getting excited about it, but in your opinion, do you think it's enough to go off?

Andy - No, your parents shouldn't be going out buying consoles on the basis of it. Uh, and, and it, it, it really, it really should be a very strong cautionary now, uh, for, for my colleagues in other areas of, of psychology, who would go on to say, uh, to make very strong unsubstantiated claims about the negative effects.

09:56 - Review: Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Is the latest Assassin's Creed game worth getting?

Review: Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Chris Berrow & Leigh Milner, Naked Gaming Podcast

Chris Berrow and Leigh Milner review Assassin's Creed Valhalla...

So Assassin's creed is one of the biggest series of games. It's a proper launch title for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox series X. So they was designed with those systems in mind, or that you can play it on the PS4 and the Xbox One as well. Um, I think it's a really terrible game. I'm really sorry to say - in previous Assassin's creed, you would climb on top of buildings sneak around and then the ultimate mission would be to stealthily assassinate, hence the name, some kind of evil character, and then try and escape and run away. In this game because it's Valhalla... they haven't really got skyscraping buildings and huge tall towers and stuff because they've set it in Viking times. I think that's the overriding problem here. So instead of having that excitement, this has become a bit of a hack and slash or kind of game. Also, the voice acting is absolutely shocking.

13:11 - Review: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

Is the next Zelda game - Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - anywhere near as good as Breath of the Wild?

Review: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Chris Berrow & Leigh Milner, Naked Gaming Podcast

Chris Berrow and Leigh Milner review Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity...

So this is the origin story of Zelda Breath of the Wild - Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. It's basically the huge fight that took place a hundred years before.

So everyone was super excited to see, well, basically what the story is and to see it unfold, the graphics are awesome.

The graphics are exactly like Zelda Breath of the Wild, that cartoon you style, which you saw a bit of it when I was playing it actually, um, it's very like a game called Dynasty Warriors, which you may or may not have played, but you've got hundreds of people running at you and then you hack and slash them to death.

So it's basically Dynasty Warriors, but with the Zelda graphics - it's beautiful. It runs really smoothly.

I was a bit worried because a lot of people were saying in the demo version, it was very jittery and laggy. And I thought, Oh, I don't even, I don't really want to play the demo, but they sorted out all the problems.

8/10 and it's out now for the Nintendo Switch.

15:46 - Review: Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The next Spider-Man game is out now, should you buy it (from the web?! THE WEB!)

Review: Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Chris Berrow & Leigh Milner, Naked Gaming Podcast

Chris Berrow & Leigh Milner review Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

If you ever played a Batman Arkham Asylum or Arkham City or any of those games, um, it's got very similar combat style, very slick, smooth, you know, you try and chain your combinations together of attacks. And it's a very fair system. So there's a little warning light that comes up if someone's about to shoot you and you can dodge that. And then that gives you your combo continues and you can get multipliers 15 times combo. Um, really, really smooth, but there's so many moves. It's like an extra level up on the previous game - 9/10

21:46 - Founder of eSports team G2

Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez tells us what it's like to run one of the biggest eSports teams in the world...

Founder of eSports team G2

Chris Berrow interviews Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez, founder of eSports team G2.

Carlos - It's part of our job to number one, understanding, you know, where, uh, these, this whole thing is going, you have to understand what people like to watch him as you know, in terms of movies, what people is is craving for. And we sort of digest all the information and we sort of automatically understand which game is going to be relevant tomorrow. Right? So people are looking more towards, you know, maybe battle royales or something because they want to feel that sense of accomplishment of being the number one out of a hundred people. For example, we, I think we already went through that and I feel like things are slowly shifting again, right?

Chris - What's your number one game?

Carlos - League of Legends. Nothing gets close. Not FIFA, not Call of Duty, nothing gets close. I still see people that 10 years ago played 10 hours a day, still playing 10 hours a day today. So it has the, it has the learning curve that allows for new players to want to come by new players, to want to play the game. Any has that depth to ensure that hardcore players stick around for many years and that's the formula every publisher's trying to hit. Right? And that, I think only a few have been able to hit and the players themselves as well.

Chris - Nowadays prize money is absolutely huge. Nowadays you're talking millions and millions of dollars people, again, who aren't quite into e-sports. They might look at it and go, Whoa, this is, this is a huge industry. That must be a great thing to be able to tap into for you because there's all this money on offer kind of thing.

Carlos - As a matter of fact, prize money only accounts for less than 10% of the overall revenue. Christina Ronaldo has been playing at the highest level for like what 15 years. An eSport competitor will play at the highest level for three, four, five tops... on top of that games might come and go.

Game and Watch: Super Mario Bros.

27:06 - Retro Revival: Game and Watch: Super Mario Bros.

Is the Mario "game and watch" even a watch if it doesn't strap to your wrist?

Retro Revival: Game and Watch: Super Mario Bros.

Chris Berrow and Leigh Milner review the Game and Watch: Super Mario Bros.

It's literally the size of my hand and you can play games in it, which you can hear at the moment. Well, it's the, it's the old school Mario that, you know, you used to play on. I'm not obviously not very good at talking and playing games... it isn't my forte. So basically it's like the old school Mario that we used to play. And then when you're bored of playing, you can just literally press time and look at that... it'as also a clock!

Find out how gamers are helping in the fight against Covid-19.

Cure coronavirus by playing games
Eva Higginbotham, The Naked Scientists

Eva Higginbotham finds out how gamers in EVE Online are fighting Coronavirus.

Probably the most important thing is we're trying to help scientists in the fight against COVID. So one of the technologies that's being widely used is full cytometry. What we use for assumption four is look at the different cells that are present in our blood, the white blood cells that are used to both detect infection and to fight infection. We, uh, take a sample of a patient's blood and we label the cells so that they glow with light. When they run past the laser one by one, what we label these cells is on proteins. On the cell surface that we know define the function of these cells.

These protein markers act as signposts to scientists telling them what kind of cells are present in a patient's blood. This is important because when your body mounts an immune response to something, a lot of different types of white blood cells get involved and understanding which immune cells are prevalent. And in what proportions tell scientists loads of information about how a patient is responding to an infection like coronavirus or a treatment scientists can now label up to 50 different proteins on the surface of these cells at the same time. So what Ryan and his team have done is broken down the 50 dimensional data into lots of two-dimensional puzzles. And that swear Eve online comes in. These 2D puzzles are prettied up and uploaded into the Eve online world where players can access them as a part of a mini game, like a side project to the main business of hunting down enemy spaceships. And the more puzzles you solve, the better rewards you get within the game.
